Dunbar Stongs May Tournament
Dunbar's Buntain Wins over Hastings' Red Sox
In a well played final game, Dunbar's Buntain continued to roll with the bats and superalitive defense that brought them undefeated to the final. It was a tight 3-1 final with the Hastings' Sox continuing to play very well but, as always, it was a play here or a hit there that made the difference for Buntain's roller coaster season. The game ended on a double play for Buntain that involved a catch that was anything but a "can of corn" and a double off first. This marked the first time a Dunbar team lifted the Ralph Stong Cup.

Dunbar's Inaugural Minor B May Tournament
At the other end of Memorial Field was an exciting and fun Minor B (7-8 year olds) tournament that Dunbar put on for the first time. It involved teams from Dunbar, Kerrisdale and Little Mountain. The games were great fun and well attended. The final saw two Dunbar teams pitted against each other and in fact regular season teammates playing on opposite sides on the well balanced teams. Team 2 "Angels and Demons" kept their momentum going in the final to prevail. A two out of three could have ended up either way. This was a great day for player and character development and all looked forward to next year.

Dunbar Tournament Team Information
Dear Dunbar Parents,
There are two critical items we need you to consider.
1) Tournament application (PDF here) for your player that must be filled out and returned to DLL President by end of day May 24th. You submit this through your team coach or directly to a DLL executive member.
Coaches please make sure you discuss this with all your players.
No Applications will be received by the executive on the 25th of May. On Tuesday, May 25th, a parent of each player who has indicated they wish to play on a Dunbar Tournament Team is required to attend a meeting at the Dunbar Community Centre at 8:15 pm., required means there are no exceptions. Having attended in previous years provides no exclusion sorry. At the meeting, the expectations of the players and IMPORTANTLY their families will be explained by the league officials and parents will have the opportunity to ask any questions at that time. Please note that this meeting is for parents only. In the meantime, please see your child’s coach OR ANY LEAGUE OFFICIAL with any questions about this form.
2) A link to a league survey (anonymous) about tournaments kindly put together by Ken L. that will be used to help us plan for these tournaments. Please try this out, it takes about a minute.

OPENING DAY: Welcome to Dunbar Baseball's Best Day of the Year.
This Saturday, April 17th, is a great day to be involved with Dunbar Baseball as we all, as a community, get together at the Majors Field to open the season with so much opportunity for fun and growth with sport. There is a full slate of activities for the day and many games to be played. The highlight is the "roll call" of all the teams on to Currie Field for one big assemblage of Dunbar's finest. As you can imagine this involves a lot of people. I have included some key points and times below to keep in mind to make this an enjoyable and safe experience. The weather is looking good and I look forward to seeing everyone there. GO Dunbar!
Joe McDermott
Dunbar Little League President.
9:30 – 9:45 am Teams will gather outside the Majors field fence and a “herder” will help coordinate the teams running on to the field. There should be signs where teams will line up. The Teams will enter by oldest Division First (Majors) and by alphabetical order within division: Majors, Minor A Senior, Minor A Jr., Minor B, Tball Y2, T ball Y2, Blast Ball.
10:00 Welcome followed by Roll Call of teams entering field. Opening ceremonies including:
O Canada
Opening Pitch
Little League Pledge
Volunteers
Take Me out to the Ball Game
Closing remarks
Rapid exit from field.
11:00 Games Start in all divisions. Play Ball!
The weather forecast looks great but the ceremonies go rain or shine.
Other Key points.
1- Please walk to Memorial Park if possible. Given that there will be in
excess of 2000 people there, by the time you park you might not be much
further ahead than walking.
2- Please do not bring any dogs Saturday, as given the organized chaos,
even the best behaved family pet may get jittery, and some children are
not comfortable around dogs.
3- We will ask each team’s coaches and manager to run onto the diamond
with the kids, but please no other adults (unless your team is short a coach
or manager that day). Also, for those adults running in, please do not also
be pushing strollers as they can damage the outfield grass and also obstruct
other parents ability to see their very special DLL’er on this day.
4- As you know your child best, if you do not think they can handle the
approximately 45 minutes of the ceremony it may be best to watch it with
them from the stands or the outfield. We do try and break up the ceremonial
parts with some fun things (like an energetic rendition of Take Me Out To
The Ballgame), but I appreciate that is a long time for a younger child
and we will try and get everything done as quickly as possible.
5- Kids Free Snack: Each year on opening day the league provides the kids
with a free bag of chips and a free pop. This year, instead of distributing
a ticket to each child that they redeem for a bag of chips and a pop at
the basketball courts behind the concession after the opening ceremony,
we ask that each team assign their manager or team parent to come to pick
up the chips and pop for their entire team. Each team will be checked off
a list so send only one parent. This will make it much faster for your teams
and parents as it will avoid any long lines of kids, sometimes lasting 1.5
hours.
DLL WORK DAY - SATURDAY APRIL 10th AT 09: 00: RAIN OR SHINE
Dunbar let's collectively raise the barn!
With 615 players and five diamonds that will get continuous use over the next couple of months, there is significant work that must be done before the season starts. So, on Saturday, 9:00am April 10th come one come all (except kids, sorry) to the DLL Workday. This is a great way to meet other DLL parents and also fulfill your volunteer requirement to the league.
You should plan on bringing shovels, rakes and a wheelbarrow if you have one and work gloves help, perhaps ibuprofen. Fences must go up, grass edges trimmed and levelled, new red baseball shale sand put down and levelled..... This maintenance is not just cosmetic as it has an effect on the safety of play.
Where: Minor B Parents Meet at the Balaclava Minor B Diamond. 31st and Balaclava. Walter Wells (Minor B coordinator) will be supervising this area. Please sign in with him to receive your volunteer credit.
Where: Blastball,Tball, Minor A, Majors parents meet at 9 am by the Majors’ diamond (the one with the concession stand) in Memorial Park West. Meet at the concession. You will need to sign in with Eric Hopkins (volunteer coordinator) at the concession first. John O’Malley will assign you and other parents with kids in the same division to some tasks that will help make your player’s season much more enjoyable.
We’ll wrap it up a few hours later.
Umpire Clinic - April 10th

What's New for 2010
It is time again to start planning for your 2010 Dunbar Baseball schedule and I am looking forward to the start of another great season. The Olympic year will complicate the early schedule a bit but we should get through that fine… Eh O Canada GO!.
We all know the phrase "Success has its price" and the success and popularity of Dunbar Little League will have an impact this year on the structure of our league. The growth of our league over recent years has put us in a position where our field space is used to the maximum extent for practices and games with little room for rainouts. We have tried hard to find a spot for everyone but this has resulted in overly large team rosters in some divisions or players pushed out of their appropriate playing level and waiting lists. The executive, with significant consultation, has made some critical decisions that you need to be aware of for 2010. We tried to minimize the impact on the Dunbar experience with these changes. Please read these carefully before registering and we look forward to seeing you at the field.
- This year we will have on-line registration. This will greatly facilitate the jobs of the Registrar, player-agents and division coordinators in providing electronic control of registered players and teams. Please see the registration information in the newsletter for details.
- Two additional divisions will have a registration-cap on numbers. As you know, the Majors division has been capped at 72 (6 teams) for some time. It would be very difficult to accommodate additional teams at this level. For 2010, both MINOR A and MINOR B will be capped at 130 players each. This is 10 teams of 13 and the maximum we can handle on our fields. This represents an increase of an additional Minor A team in 2010. Placement of players in these divisions will be on a first come, first serve basis so register online early. Placement in Minor A is based on player assessments. This will make our waiting lists slightly longer. We would therefore like to ask you to be committed to the schedule of games before you register.
- Placement in a division is based on baseball age and not school age. Baseball age is the player's age as of April 30 of the current baseball year. This has always been the Little League regulation but needs to be followed because the divisions within the league are full. Non-grand fathered out-of-boundary players will be accepted after in-boundary registrants are complete.
- Because of the growth of the league, this year (2010) the executive has decided to limit the number of 10-year-old draftees to 1 (one) per Majors team provided the draftee is in the top 25% of all players evaluated to be drafted in current year. This is an unavoidable consequence of our league size and Little League Regulations regarding the drafting of 12 year olds. Please be reminded that majors is a competitive division that requires a high commitment of players and parents including: 2 practices and 3 games a week, and a non-optional volunteer requirement of the parents to work in the concession stand and score shed.
- In the Majors division the executive and Majors coaches have decided to test run "Continuous batting through the order (CBO)" for the first 10 scheduled games. The league will carefully monitor game statistics to gauge the impact on games played. Continuing this policy will be contingent on the results of the trial.
- LL has announced the following changes to Pitching Rules for players 14 and under. 1-20 pitches - 0 days of rest; 21-35 - 1 day of rest; 36-50 - 2 days of rest; 51-65 - 3 days of rest; 66 and over - 4 days of rest. The maximum number of pitches remains at 85 for 11-12 and 75 for 9-10 year olds.
- We are excited about initiating a new program of player development in several divisions by hiring technical coaches to help teams structure the early practices and focus on key skills in both Minor A and Minor B. This is a league wide effort to improve player/coach development with the idea of more-skill…more-fun.
Please read the 2010 newsletter and other sections of the website to get more detailed information on these issues. We are looking forward to seeing you all in the spring and the warm days of Dunbar baseball.
Joe McDermott, DLL President.

About Dunbar Little League
Dunbar Little League, which begins its 53rd year in operation
in 2010 is one of the largest little leagues in British Columbia. Our
league is known and respected throughout Canada for its spirit of fair
play and offering boys and girls, regardless of their level of skill,
the opportunity to play baseball, learn some skills and have fun.
Most of the league's games are played at Memorial Park located at Dunbar
and West 33rd Avenue. However some T-Ball games are played at Valdez Park
and Minor B games are played at Balaclava. In 2006, over 600 boys and
girls ranging in age from 4 to 12 participated in games.
During the months of April through June, Memorial Park transforms into a centre of activity within the community. Many families enjoy the warm spring evenings and hot weekend days down at the park. Some bring picnics while many enjoy the city renowned cheeseburgers cooked up at the concession stand.
Whether you're new to the Dunbar area or have been a resident for a number of years, Dunbar Little League baseball is a great way for your son or daughter to have lots of fun and learn new skills
