Buntain Plays in Ross Dower tournament

Buntain, with the help of Thomas, played in the Ross Dower Easter Tournament at Little Mountain. They ended up with a 2-1 record and just missed playing in the semifinal by a runs against calculation. It was a fun tournament with 12 teams from around the lower mainland. Their one loss came to a strong Hastings team.

Player Evaluations 2011

This year we will be evaluating the potentially new majors (tryout) players and Minor A players on the same weekend.

February 19th Minor A and the 20th Majors

This will be the only weekend where we will be performing group evaluations. Previously there was a large time gap between majors tryouts and Minor A evaluations and many Minor A players were evaluated twice. We are performing Majors evaluations and Minor A evaluations on the same weekend to make it easier to schedule, to make it more standardized and to have team formation earlier in season. We will be using standardized criteria for all evaluations.

Here are the critical times.

Majors and Minor A evaluations at UBC Baseball field.

1. Minor A evaluations will be run on Saturday the 19th from 1:00 to 4:00

2. Majors’ will be run on Sunday the 20th from 1:00 to 4:00.

Please dress only in proper baseball sports attire with protective cup. Bring hat and glove and water and no food.

Bring a jacket appropriate to the weather that weekend. We will run unless you receive a specific message that the weather is too bad. This is an artificial turf field, baseball cleats made for a dirt infield will likely have too much grip. If you have them turf shoes or runners would work well.

February 5th warm-up session for Majors tryout players (and players still considering Majors Try-Outs) at UBC SRC gym. 6:15 to 8:15. This is not an evaluation session.

We would like all registered players that are trying out for Majors and players that are not quite sure if they want to try out for Majors or want more information about Majors try-outs to come to the warm-up session. It is still possible to be considered for Majors at this point even if you did not register as Majors tryout. This warm-up session is not mandatory but highly recommended. It will be a fun session to get prepared for the Majors try-outs on February 20th. We will have an important talk for the parents to explain and answer questions to the Majors Eligible parents right at the beginning of the session regarding the Majors try-outs format and the Majors Parent commitment during the season.

This warm-up session is in the multipurpose gym SRC at UBC on the 5th of February from 6:15 PM to 8:15 PM. Please arrive at 6:05 PM to get signed into the session and get warmed up. Parents need to participate in the talk and question session at 6:15 PM. It should not take too long.

Majors in 2011

MAJORS

  • 10-12 year olds

This is the top competitive division of Little League Baseball and in Dunbar players aged 10-12 years may qualify for selection to a Majors Division team if they have commitment, skill set, and have played a minimum of one year at the Minor A Division level. Mandatory parent participation through rotational scorekeeping and concession duty is essential for Majors.

Players are selected through a draft system and only a limited number of positions are available. Not every player trying out will be drafted.  Players who are not drafted must attend the Minor A evaluations to be placed on a Minor A team. No out of boundary players are eligible to be drafted, unless they are grand-fathered as per the official rosters sent to Little League Canada. Once drafted to a team, the player remains on that same team while age eligible for Dunbar Little League.

Games are played at the Majors diamond at Dunbar Memorial Park (33rd Avenue and Highbury). There are usually 2 practices and 2-3 games per week. It is intensive and attendance is expected. A $100 postdated cheque is required as uniform deposit for the team jersey and belt.

Players who have not previously played on a Majors team and wish to be considered for the Majors draft pool are required to attend both days of the Majors player evaluation session in February and “pre-evaluation” skills sessions in a gym.
