Tournament Baseball at Dunbar Little League

Tournament baseball is an exciting and rewarding experience for players who are committed and enthusiastic about baseball.

Tournaments are divided into:

  • May Long Weekend Tournaments
  • Post Season Tournament Teams

Registration for tournament teams will occur during the season. Please be sure to indicate interest for consideration when you registered prior to the season. You will be provided with further information or invited to a meeting to discuss the evaluation process and commitment requirements.

Questions can be directed to the Michael Pettifer, DLL’s Tournament Coordinator: mpettifer@dunbarbaseball.ca

Difference between All Star and Selects teams

All Star teams represent Dunbar Little League in the sanctioned Little League District 1 tournaments.

Selects teams promote player development in preparation for the following year’s All Star tournament teams.

Player Commitment

Playing post season baseball is a privilege, not a right. Players and families will be required to make significant time commitments.

Each of the Tournament teams will require players to be available from the end of the regular season to the end of July. For the 11/12 All Star team, availability could extend to late August should the team advance to Nationals and the Little League World Series.

Between practices, exhibition games, and tournaments, players can expect to be at the ballpark 5 to 6 times a week. In the event that either of the All Star teams do not advance past the District 1 tournament, the teams are committed to enter further tournaments through July.

Fees

Once selected to a tournament team, a player fee will be required. The amount will depend on what tournaments the team enters in, the location of those tournaments, and the team swag provided. The fee will not cover travel or hotel costs.

Player Selection

No player has made any team. Players/families should not have the impression that they have secured a position on any tournament team.

PLAYERS ARE NOT CHOSEN BY THE HEAD COACH OF ANY TEAM.

Baseball Age 8 players wishing to play in the Dairy Queen 8’s tournament do not have to participate in a selection process. We feel that all age 8 players who are interested, committed, and enthusiastic about baseball should get an opportunity to play in the Dairy Queen 8’s tournament. DLL will enter multiple teams into the tournament if there is enough player interest.

During the regular season, players who have indicated their interest in being considered for a post season team will attend special sessions to be assessed by independent (non-DLL) evaluators. Dates for these sessions will be communicated once the regular season schedule is confirmed. Input will also be solicited and considered from the players’ regular house season coaches. Raw talent alone does not get one on a team. Players will be watched for having the right attitude (good work ethic, positive outlook, unselfish play, and supporting their teammates).

An independent committee formed by the Board of Directors will choose the players for each team. Directors with conflicts or players under consideration will not take part in the player selection committee.

Players who are selected for Post Season Tournament teams will be notified and officially introduced on the Closing Day of the regular Dunbar Little League season.

More details about the full player selection process will be communicated here during the season.

Coach Selection

Coaches interested in head/assistant coaching one of the DLL tournament teams must submit an application form to the DLL President outlining their coaching philosophy, experience, and desire to coach a particular team.

Once all applications are received, the DLL Coach Selection Committee will meet to choose the coaching teams. The DLL Coach Selection Committee is composed of the DLL President, the Tournament Coordinator, and one other member. After their decisions, the Coach Selection Committee and bring their recommendations to the DLL Board of Directors for ratification.
